XPO Logistics Expands Green Capacity on Europe–North Africa Route

Source:

XPO Logistics has added 60 new GPS-equipped trailers to boost Europe–North Africa shipments. The upgrade increases capacity by 50% and supports more eco-friendly, efficient transport through ports like Tangier and Motril.

To support the growing demand for cross-border logistics between Europe and North Africa, XPO Logistics has expanded its fleet with 60 state-of-the-art container trailers. These units are engineered for intermodal transport, accommodating 6m, 12m, and 15m containers, while contributing to a lower environmental footprint.

Enhanced Transport Efficiency

The new container trailers feature GPS geolocation systems for real-time tracking. With this upgrade, XPO expects to increase its transportation capacity by 50%, generating over 6,000 additional movements per year.

Strengthening Key Routes

XPO has also introduced new strategic routes linking the Port of Tangier in Morocco with Algeciras and Motril in Spain. These connections enable faster, more efficient, and sustainable operations across the Strait of Gibraltar.

Growth in the Moroccan Market

Since launching operations in Morocco in 2011, XPO has significantly expanded its regional footprint. Over the past six years, the company has tripled its revenue in Morocco and completed more than 30,000 shipments between Europe and North Africa by 2024.

Sector-Focused Solutions

This investment reinforces XPO’s role as a specialized logistics provider for sectors such as automotiveindustrial construction, and retail. The company already operates duo trailers on the Strait of Gibraltar, with an average of 400 crossings per month.

Strategic Expansion Through Motril

Looking ahead, XPO plans for 35% to 40% of its Europe-Morocco crossings to pass through the Port of Motril by 2025, positioning it as a strategic hub. This route is expected to deliver a 10% reduction in CO2 emissions, aligning with the company's sustainability goals.

Executive Insight

Massimo Marsili, Managing Director for Southern Europe and Morocco, stated:

“The expansion of our operations in Morocco—with over 30,000 shipments as of 2024 and new investments—reflects our commitment to increasingly efficient, innovative, and sustainable cross-border logistics. Morocco is a strategic market experiencing rapid expansion, and we want to lead that development with solutions that are agile, scalable, efficient, and focused on the practical needs of our customers.”
