As China pushes toward carbon neutrality and smarter logistics, new energy vehicle (NEV) leaders are expanding their focus from passenger cars and light-duty vehicles to heavy-duty trucks, a segment poised for rapid growth.

A New Growth Engine for NEV Industry
According to Zeng Yuqun, CEO of battery giant CATL, the heavy-duty truck sector is expected to undergo explosive growth in the next three years. He predicts that over 50% of new heavy trucks sold in this period will be powered by new energy, driven by both zero-carbon transformation goals and cost optimization needs in logistics.
Industry experts agree, noting that the falling cost of lithium batteries, combined with supportive “trade-in” government policies, is making the total cost of ownership (TCO) for electric heavy trucks increasingly attractive compared to traditional diesel models.
Traditional Players Go Green
Established heavy truck manufacturers such as Sinotruk and FAW are now rapidly transitioning to electric powertrains, investing heavily in R&D and production capacity.
Meanwhile, bus manufacturer Yutong, electric vehicle pioneer BYD, and construction machinery firms XCMG and Zoomlion are also entering the electric heavy truck arena, expanding their product lines and market presence.
BYD and FAW Lead the Charge
BYD has rolled out a comprehensive lineup of electric heavy trucks, including:
-
Electric Tractors
-
Dump Trucks
-
Concrete Mixers
These vehicles are being targeted at both long-haul logistics and urban construction markets, where emissions regulations and noise limitations are increasingly stringent.
On the other hand, FAW Jiefang, the commercial arm of FAW Group, is accelerating its efforts to electrify its heavy truck portfolio, aiming to maintain its leadership in China’s evolving commercial vehicle market.
Outlook: Fast Lane to Electrification
With mounting environmental regulations, strong policy support, and increasing economic viability, electric heavy-duty trucks are no longer a niche—they are becoming a mainstream force in China’s commercial vehicle landscape.
As NEV giants and traditional manufacturers race to capture this growing segment, the coming years are likely to witness a major shift in the country’s transportation infrastructure—from diesel to electric, from legacy to smart mobility.
